Joe Laughlin has been sailing for over 25 years. He claims that he started sailing in order to meet girls, but enjoyed the sport so much, he forgot his original objective. Offshore racing, coastal cruising, exploring Galveston Bay , and an occasional Wednesday night race, are some of his sailing activities.

He has been a American Sailing Association certified sailing 1995 and received ASA's "Outstanding Instructor Award" for 2004 and 2005. Joe has focused his attention on beginning students and the Basic Keelboat program. He is considered one of the best basic keelboat instructors in the area. Over 2000 students have attended his classroom in the last 5 years. Helping students build a solid foundation is his favorite aspect of the ASA program.

In 2003, Joe created the Fast Track Coastal Navigation Course which is offered exclusively by Bay Area Sailing School. This program has produced more ASA certified navigators in its first year, than five years of the standard navigation program. He is also a Texas Parks and Wildlife boater education instructor,
